Account, category or subcategory?
These fields answer different questions:
| Field | What it tells you | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Where you paid from | Bank Account |
| Category | What the purchase was for | Groceries |
| Subcategory | More detail within a category, if you need it | Fresh Produce, under Groceries |
Add a category
- Open the navigation menu and choose Categories.
- Tap the + button.
- Enter a Category Name, such as Groceries. Add a description if useful.
- Choose Income or Expense under Transaction Type. Groceries is an expense; Salary is income.
- Leave Parent set to no parent category for a top-level category.
- Tap the icon to choose its appearance, then tap Save.
Review the existing names first. Creating both “Eating Out” and “Restaurants” may divide spending you meant to review together.
Put a subcategory under a parent
A parent groups related purposes. For example, Transport could contain Fuel, Parking and Public Transport. Use this detail when it helps you understand spending or set a budget.
- In Categories, tap the parent category and choose Add Subcategory.
- Enter the subcategory name and check the selected parent.
- Check the transaction type, choose an icon if needed, and save.
You can also choose a parent on the category editing screen. A category that already has children cannot itself be assigned a parent.
Edit a name or apply a category
Tap an existing category and choose Edit Category, or choose Edit Subcategory for a child. Update the details and tap Update. System categories have editing restrictions; if the app says one cannot be changed, create a suitable category of your own.
To categorise a purchase, open that transaction, select the category and save. Changing a category’s name changes the shared category; selecting another category on one transaction changes that entry’s classification.
Check what is included
Tap a category and choose View Transactions to inspect its entries. If prompted, choose the currency to review. You can also open an expense report for the same account and period.
If too much is under Others, reclassify the individual transactions that need a more specific category. For a mixed receipt, use a split transaction so only the relevant portion reaches each category.
