Work out the parts first

The goal is a useful breakdown, not a separate category for every item. A few meaningful parts are usually enough to explain the purchase in budgets and reports.

Create the split

  1. Start an expense with the account, date and payee for the purchase.
  2. Use the Split Category or split option on the entry screen.
  3. Add each category and its amount.
  4. Review the parts against the receipt total, then save the split transaction.

Keep all the parts associated with the account used to pay the receipt. Moving money between accounts is a transfer; it is not another category on a receipt. Split transactions cannot be set to repeat in the Android app.

Check the category totals

Open the transaction again to review the parts. Then look at the corresponding category report for the same account and period. The grocery portion should appear under groceries, rather than the entire receipt total.

Do not also save a separate £80 ordinary expense for the same receipt. If you already entered one, edit or correct that entry as part of creating the split so the purchase is represented only once.
