Record expenses where you paid them
Add an expense for a purchase and select the account you actually used. A grocery purchase on a credit card belongs to that card account, even if you will pay the card from current account later.
Use a recognizable payee and category. Add notes for information you may need later, such as who a shared purchase was for. Keep the main description short enough to recognize in the transaction list.
Record income where it arrived
- Use the add control and choose income.
- Choose the receiving account.
- Enter the amount received, the date and a meaningful description.
- Select the income category and save.
For salary deposited into current account, use the amount that arrived in that account. Money moved from your savings account belongs under Transfer, because you already owned it.
Find and check an entry
Use transaction filters to narrow the account and period before searching for an entry. When a report looks wrong, compare the date and category on the transaction with the filters on the report.
For similar purchases, copy a previous transaction and update the details. For a receipt containing several categories, split it. Both approaches are useful only if you check the new amount and date before saving.
